What to do if your Ricoh printer has a paper jam? Here is a step-by-step troubleshooting and resolution guide.

Paper jams in Ricoh printers are a common problem in daily use. At the very least, they can affect printing efficiency, while at the worst, they can damage printer components. In fact, most paper jams can be resolved with standard procedures. Below are detailed troubleshooting and resolution steps.

1. Safety Prerequisites

Before resolving a paper jam, always follow safety guidelines:

First, turn off the printer by pressing the power button and unplug the power cord to avoid electric shock or burns (the fixing unit is hot during operation).

Prepare a clean, soft cloth or tissue to clean any remaining paper scraps to prevent secondary jams.

2. Paper Jam Location Troubleshooting and Resolution

Paper jams in Ricoh printers typically occur in the paper feed, print, and paper output areas. Different locations require different resolutions:

  • 1) Paper feed jam (paper not entering the print path)

Symptom: Paper is stuck in the paper tray or manual feed slot and has not fully entered the machine.

Solution:

If the paper tray is jammed, gently pull it out. With both hands, grasp the sides of the jammed paper and slowly pull it out in the direction of the paper feed (do not pull hard to avoid tearing or leaving any residue).

Check the paper in the tray for flatness and wrinkles. When reloading, ensure the edges of the paper align with the scales in the tray and do not exceed the maximum capacity mark.

Clean the paper feed roller: Wipe the surface of the paper feed roller with a damp, soft cloth (power off) to remove dust or paper debris to prevent insufficient friction that may cause paper feed problems.

  • 2) Paper Jam in the Printing Area (Paper Jammed Near the Drum Unit or Fuser Unit)

Symptom: The paper is partially inserted into the machine and may be curled or wrinkled, possibly accompanied by an unusual sound.

Solution:

Open the front or side cover of the printer, locate the jammed paper, and observe the paper’s path. If the paper is near the drum unit, carefully lift the drum unit cover and pull out the jammed paper horizontally, avoiding contact with the drum surface (to prevent contamination and affect print quality).

If the paper jam is near the fuser unit (a hot area inside the printer), wait 10-15 minutes for it to cool before attempting any further operations. Grab the uncurled end of the paper and slowly pull it out, taking care not to pull on any remaining paper scraps.

  • 3) Paper Jam in the Paper Exit Area (Paper Stuck in the Exit Port)

Symptom: Most of the paper has been printed, but it is stuck in the exit port and cannot be fully ejected.

Solution:

Pinch the sides of the paper and gently pull it out. If the paper is stuck tightly, try gently rocking it back and forth to remove it.

Check the exit port for any foreign objects or paper scraps, and clean them with a soft brush.

3. Preventative Measures for Frequent Paper Jams

Use Qualified Paper: Choose paper suitable for your printer model (such as regular A4 paper, with a recommended weight of 70-80g). Avoid using paper that is too thin, too thick, damp, or has uneven edges.

Proper Paper Loading: Shake and align the paper before loading to avoid stacking too tightly. Keep the paper height in the paper tray within the scale line. When manually feeding, only load one or two sheets at a time.

Perform Regular Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean the paper feed rollers, paper output rollers, and internal channels monthly to remove dust and paper scraps. If the printer has not been used for an extended period, inspect the interior for foreign objects before restarting it.

Replace Consumables Promptly: When consumables such as toner cartridge and drum unit are nearing the end of their lifespan, replace them promptly to avoid paper jams caused by consumables.

4. Notes and Summary

If paper fragments remain after a paper jam and cannot be removed, or if paper jams occur frequently and the above causes have been eliminated, do not forcefully disassemble the printer. Contact a qualified repair technician to avoid damaging internal components.

The structure of different Ricoh printer models may vary slightly. Refer to the illustrated instructions in the “Paper Jam Handling” section of the printer manual for instructions.

The above steps can quickly resolve most paper jams. Proper daily use and maintenance can effectively reduce paper jams and ensure stable printer operation.
